Huerta de Vero organizes the II Jewish and Legumes Festival

The population of Huerta de Vero recovers next October 1 the celebration of the II Bean and Legume Festival, created with great success in 2019 and which had to be suspended for the two consecutive years due to the pandemic. The event is organized by the Town Hall of Santa María de Dulcis in collaboration with the Somontano Region and is part of the project for the promotion and recovery of native horticultural varieties “The value of the garden” launched in 2018.

The program for the second edition of the Jewish Festival is more ambitious than before and will have training and information workshops, technical conferences, children’s workshops to facilitate reconciliation and participation in activities, tasting of tapas of vegetables to take away or taste, music, farmers’ market, processors and local artisans , an exhibition of recovered traditional varieties, exchange of varieties and other entertainment. In case of rain, all activities will take place in the social premises of Huerta de Vero.

The inauguration of the II Bean and Legume Festival It will be inaugurated at 11:30 a.m. by the authorities. At noon, a table of experiences will begin in which the recovery of the traditional bean in Sobrarbe will be addressed by Emilia Puyuelo and Juan García from the association ‘Un paso back’. It will be followed by the conference “Cielos de Ascara: recovery of indigenous cereals and legumes”, by Mari Cruz Deogracias from Jardiniers-Atades. And the last technical session will be given by Lucía López, from Justicia Alimentaria, who will talk about the projects for the recovery of local varieties in the countries of the South and will present the project on food in Aragon.

Throughout the morning there will be the children’s workshop ‘Let’s play with seeds’ and the music of the Gaiteros del Somontano will play, which will be replaced by the duo ‘Entre dos’. From 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., the Concilia project organized the ‘Ca cuisine’ workshop to recycle canning jars. Likewise, the restaurants of the municipality will serve tapas to eat or take away based on native vegetables.

In the afternoon, from 4.30 p.m. to 6 p.m., the training workshop on ecological pest and disease control of traditional beans, taught by Ramón Aljibe, of the La Sazón cooperative. At the same time, the little ones will be able to enjoy a new game with the seeds.

This event is promoted by the Town Hall of Santa María de Dulcis with the technical support of the Somontano de Barbastro region and the co-financing of the Provincial Council of Huesca. For its development, it has the involvement of the Santa Águeda de Huerta de Vero Association, as well as the support of other entities such as Ceder Somontano, the Aragón Seed Network, Food Justice, the One Step Association Back, Gardeners-Atades, among others.

In the presentation of the Festival, the mayor of Santa María de Dulcis, Mariano Lisa, recalled that this festival was born with the aim of recover abandoned orchards or traditional varieties that were in danger of being lost. “We want to recover our tradition and Huerta de Vero has always been linked to its beans, as can be seen in the festivities of San Isidro. And since the first edition we have seen great involvement from the neighborhood association and from the whole city”, he assured, while confiding that events like the one on Saturday meet three objectives: to recover traditional varieties, that local restaurants include these legumes in their menus and that the new settlers see in these vacant orchards a possibility of additional income through their cultivation.

For his part, the president of the Somontano de Barbastro region, Daniel Gracia, included these conferences in a project launched in 2014 with “Your seeds a treasure”, followed in 2019 by “The value of the garden” to promote the agro sector. – food and local products. Result of these actions 164 seeds brought by 50 informant gardeners were saved on its cultivation and the development of recipes. Among these seeds, 33 have already been studied by CITA and stored in its genetic material bank. Actions that are added to the promotion of the olive tree and the pink tomato of Barbastro with a new action that will be presented soon.
